BBQ Pinup For Grill Sign Completed

5/17/2015

Dig. This customer wanted a pinup of his wife with a grill as a logo for his BBQ business/team called "Meat Candy". The digital painting was then printed on aluminum as a sign for their grill. They then proceeded to win first place in the first BBQ contest they brought her to. Pretty rad.

Super Girl Pin Up
So this one was kind of different and fun. The Customer wanted a custom pin up painting created for his guitar which he calls "SuperGirl". So I was to use that as a starting point and come up with the details. Oh, and he also wanted it to look like a certain celebrity, so that's a first for me as well. Well, now it's time to go make a shipping crate for it, and then start on sketches for two different pin up commissions that have to be done for Christmas, busy busy.

Motorcycle Pin Up. Dig.

So this is a custom pin up commission I did in between the two different versions of the stylist pin up. It is for a girl in Scotland who wanted a digital painting of herself to turn into a decal for her boyfriend's motorcycle. ( I hope it's a Moto Guzzi, but only because I like saying that.) So yeah, Now, Corvette pin up up next next. OK, I'm done now.

Military pilot pin up commission for microbrewery completed!

All done! The customer wanted a pin up painting of his wife with a military aviation theme for his craft brewing company called "Fly By Brewing Company." I painted this pinup mostly with airbrush to give it more of that classic WWII era feel. The wings behind her are the design of the US Army Air Corps pilot wings pin of the time that military pilots would wear on their uniform. I chose to abbreviate "Company" to "Co." to save space but also because certain words were usually printed in their abbreviated form in posters of the era. I hand lettered the words with a brush in a font typical of propaganda posters of the time. Now I think I'm gonna go have a beer. Stay tuned for two digital pin up commissions coming soon.

painting progress of a military pin up paintingAir Force Pin Up
So I Thought I would post a little progress on the air-force/brewery pin up commission. I am using a new paint for this painting suggested by Kent Lind. It's Wicked Detail Color by Createx. It is specially designed for airbrushing on many different substrates. While I love Lascaux Acrylics, they are not designed for airbrushing, and as such have some issues: most notably the colors separate quickly when thinned with a lot of water. This means the color is a different hue when first airbrushing than when you get to the bottom of the cup (unless you stir it Constantly.) Secondly, the pigment particles are much larger in the Lascaux paint, so regardless of how much it is thinned, it will always have some issue being sprayed through a precise airbrush like a Iwata Custom Micron. So that is my two cents on that. More progress coming soon. Stay tuned.

Craft Brewery Pin Up Commission

pinup sketch of a pilot themed pinup from WWIIMilitary aviation poster sketch.
Well, it's been a while, not only since I've updated this blog, but also since I've even worked on a painting; what can I say, busy busy summer. I know I am still in the middle of the Soviet tank girl pinup, but when a commission comes along it gets bumped to the front of the line. This project comes from Albert who is starting a craft brewery called "Fly By Brewing Company". Albert wanted a pin up painting of his wife but didn't know exactly what he wanted for a theme. His brewery has military aviation as its theme, so working together we came up with the idea of a WWII era pilot theme set against the pilot wings of the time. Also beer. Although not in the sketch yet, the name of his company will be on top of the painting in a classic poster font.

Finally all done...the Olympics as well as working on the SEO of this site as well as some other online related work caused a bit of a slow down for this one; but I am pretty happy with the results. So up next is a Soviet military themed pinup, stay tuned.

Well waddya know!? I beet my own estimate for when this part of the sketch would be complete, take that clock! Anywho, the blacks and greys are about where I want them to be before I start the painting and the color. I am not going to build up the background in grey-scale but rather jump right in with the colors. Enjoy! now time to go watch some Olympics.

...But come to think about it, aren't all chaps assless?...otherwise they're just called "pants"...hmm Anyway, here it is, the fist stage of the sketch, at this point it's all graphite in the H's; all harder than 4H actually. So from here I will start deepening the blacks and flushing out the values more fully. With any luck the next stage may even be posted by Monday, so stay tuned!
